Yellowman's sexually explicit lyrics in popular songs such as "Them a Mad Over Me" boasted of his sexual prowess, like those of other reggae singers/deejays, earned Yellowman criticism in the mid-1980s. By the mid-1990s however, Yellowman released socially conscious material, rising to international fame along with singers such as Buju Banton. Yellowman became the islands most popular deejay despite being an albino who typically are social outcasts in Jamaica. During the early 1980s, Yellowman had over 40 singles and sometimes produced five albums in one year. His success is seen by some as a rags to riches story.

Born in Jamaica in 1956 as Winston Foster, the person who would come to be known as Yellowman faced a youth frought with hardship. Because of his albinism, a condition that was looked down upon by natives of his country, he endured hostility and scorn from those around him and was placed in an institution. During those difficult years, he drew inspiration from the Jamaican folk music of the sixties, which encouraged him to create his own songs in the hopes that he would one day gain acceptance in spite of the stigma placed upon him.

In the course of his quest for fame and validation, Yellowman developed a bold, cocky personal style and engaged in shameless self-promotion, garnering the attention and opporunities he needed to showcase his abilities. With a major talent show victory under his belt by 1979, Yellowman went on to make scores of recordings, reaching clsoe to 40 by 1982. He thrilled audiences with his wild, raunchy dancehall performances, which transformed him into a national sex symbol. Yellowman eventually became Jamaica's top-selling reggae star, and scored a recording contract with US label CBS Records, leading to a worldwide tour and an international following. One reviewer remarks, "Listening to Yellowman sing is like watching Michael Jordan play basketball. He knows he's got it, you know he's got it, and it's a trip just experiencing him perform." In recent years, Yellowman's bouts with throat cancer and skin cancer have resulted in a mellower, more serious approach to his music, but like the struggles of his early days, he has not let these difficulties stand in the way of his aspirations.

@ VBR mp3

Albino reggae toaster Yellowman (Winston Foster) parlayed his unusual looks and talent into overnight success. His music is versatile and engagingly comic in a dancehall style. Like his counterparts in American rap, he's often swaggering, boasting about his toasting and his luck with the ladies. Because his strut is goodnatured and backed up by fierce turntable work (his improv and rhythm are extraordinary), he's extremely convincing, and has become quite a sex symbol.

More than two dozen Yellowman albums flooded the market in the early '80s. Many are so-so live sets, collections of singles and outtakes, Jamaican-only releases, or team-ups with other DJs. The listing above contains only some of his most widely available LPs.

In typically nasty fashion, Rides Again contains "Want a Virign," "AIDS" and "Girl You're Too Hot." Yet after such repellent doggerel, Yellowman can draw a card showing his politically conscious side with "Ease Up President Botha," or reveal his sensitivity with an ode to late reggae singers ("In Memory").

@ 320 Kbit/s mp3

Early Reggae fans can easily remember Yellowman for his (explicit) lyrics as he rose to international fame alongside Buju Banton. By the mid-1990s however, Yellowman released socially conscious material with over 40 singles and a slew of albums including, Mister Yellowman (1982), Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt (1984) and Yellow Fever (1999).

By A Customer (Amazon.com)
Yellowman has a tendancy to heavily recycle his hits on his later albums. Thankfully, Nobody Move contains many great originals. The title track, "Watch Your Words", and "Hill and Gully Rider" are all classic Yellowman tunes. Nobody Move is no King Yellowman, but if you enjoy old school DJ or sing-jay style reggae, you'll dig this album.

Predeterminado Yellowman - Yellow Christmas

Yellowman
A Very, Very Yellow Christmas

Album : A Very, Very Yellow Christmass
Artist : Yellowman
Release Date : 1998
Label : Ras
Number of discs : 1
Genre : Dancehall
Total time : 00:41:26
Total size : 47,6 MB

Tracks :
1. Yellowman Is Coming to Town
2. Jamaica, Jamaica, We Don't Get No Snow (Jingle Bells)
3. Breadfruit Roasting on an Open Fire (The Christmas Song)
4. Children Saw Mommy Kissing Yellowman
5. African Christmas
6. Santa Claus Never Comes to the Ghetto
7. Yellow Christmas
8. This Christmas
9. Yellowman Rock (Jingle Bell Rock)
10. 'Tis the Season (Deck the Halls)
11. We Wish You a Reggae Christmas
12. 12 Days of Christmas

@ 160 Kbit/s mp3

Here comes Yellowman, his bag stuffed with more ho-ho-ho's than Santa's, lending your favorite Yuletide classics the scent of Caribbean sun 'n' surf, instead of pine tree and roast bird, via these old school "reggaematizations." A rather woozy "Yellowman Is Coming to Town" leads off this set of transformed Yuletide classics, its pensive tone departing from contemporary reggae dance hall's faster tempos, but perfectly complementing the artist's portrait in Santa getup (a parody of Bing Crosby's White Christmas album) gracing the CD cover. The baritone may have lost a bit of its booming resonance, but this top star of Jamaica's early '80s dance hall remains its hardest-working MC. Yellow switch-hits, as usual, between dead-serious and hilariously silly, and it's hard to say when he is funniest. A lengthy list of motherland nations receives season shout-outs in "African Christmas"; the man with the toys is roundly scolded in "Santa Claus Never Comes to the Ghetto." Easier to read and more typical of this inveterate clown are "Children Saw Mommy Kissing Yellowman" and the mock-lament over his island's snow deprivation in "Jamaica, Jamaica, We Don't Got No Snow." Get this one as a stocking-stuffer and you're guaranteed a merry, merry.

During the late '70s and early '80s, the DJ rose to prominence in Jamaica's musical hotbed and helped usher in the dancehall era after several years of roots reggae dominance. Some of the earliest and most talented of these toasters included Charlie Chaplin, Ranking Toyan, General Echo, Jah Thomas, and the young Josey Wales. This musical outlaw first came up with U-Roy's Stur-Gav Hi-Fi before riding hits produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes, Bunny Roots, and George Phang -- he even manned the boards himself on his sophomore release, No Way Better Than Yard. By the time of this 1984 meeting with the biggest dancehall star of the early dancehall period, Yellowman, Wales had honed his hoarse-toned and rangy delivery to perfection. The resulting album, which avoids the sad fate of many a marquee date, is one of the highlights of the period. Besides some top toasting, the album also features superb backdrops from Lawes and the Roots Radics.
